This One Hurts

By: Michael | March 6th, 2007

…And for the 42nd or so straight year, there will be no European title. I’m pretty much speechless right now. Its always worse when you get knocked out without losing a game. This one will sting for a while. Not going to go into much detail right now as I really don’t feel like it. All the credit to Valencia, who kept us from getting good shots on goal even though we had some good buildup. Pretty disappointing performance. Not sure yet what happened with that embarrassment at the end, Inter.it says that Burdisso was punched, other reports say he did the punching. Who knows. Moral of the story for this round is that it doesn’t matter how good you think you are, its tough to recover in this competition when you struggle at home. I think someone else found that out today, too…

They didn’t play well enough to deserve to win. Sad ending to the game to. Never like to see a brawl like that.

    Another heartbreak.

And it was even worse than I had predicted! Inter didn’t score a goal and sit on their lead; rather they sat on their deficit! It all began with Mancini starting both Burdisso and Dacourt in midfield. Burdisso helped clog both Valencia’s and especially Inter’s attack. I may never forgive Mancini for this decision. He always tries something conservative in the big matches and it never works.

It was collective pile of crap out there, from the team who stunk, to the ref who missed a few calls and gave way too much to Valencia, to Mancini’s line-up. Inter gave away so much in the middle, made awful touches all game, and were making very bad decisions. Figo should have started and Solari should have played. Adriano hurt or not would have been better than Crespo and Cruz combined (I heard he made the trip….?). Cruz, by the way, should just stay in Spain. How many more chances do you need to put the ball in!? And to top it off we lost a fight at the end. Talk about insult to injury….. how humiliating. But c’mon, as an Inter fan were you expecting anything else?

Having calmed myself down now, I guess it’s easy to want to blame everyone (especially the coach, as I have done). Maybe things could’ve been handled better, but it was always going to be a difficult situation, especially without Vieira and Cambiasso.

Can we start a petition against ‘away goals’?

Cou;d have been handled better. When I saw both Burdisso and Dacourt start it could not have been could. Where’s the creativity? Ibra. is not a guy that will carry a team and Crespo needs support. Stankovic is a fine player but not the answer to Vieira. Bad call by Mancini - and by the ref to not single out the hand ball. Nonetheless, Inter deserved their fate. Full marks to Valencia. I have no idea why they did not take the play to Valencia. The game plan made no sense. It was as if they wanted to wait to the last pssible minute to score so as to not allow Valencia a chance to strike back. Yet, it was Valencia who decided to take it up a notch late in the game.

@RT: He(Mancini) always tries something conservative in the big matches and it never works.

Dear RT, have you been watching any Inter games in the Italian Championship… at all…

still unbeaten, still on top, miles away from the competition, they’ve beaten direct competition AC Milan w/ 3-4 & 2-1 in the Seria A.

I share your opinion about the decision he made abt Dacourt & Burdisso, it just didnt seem the wright line-up in such an important game BUT i don’t blame him because he’s the manager and he knows or at least should know the players.

Although Inter won’t take home the CL trophy, they’re taking home the Seria A and they’ll be playing in the CL again next year!

PS: If there’s 1 manager that has mad a BIG mistake in the last CL matches, it was Arsène Wenger (Arsenal-Manager;Why? Because he left Henry on the bench and waited for waaaaaaaaaaaay to long to put him on the pitch). I’m not hating on him or Arsenal because Arsenal is my #2 team, straight after Inter Milan so for the Inter fans who got their hart ‘broken’, mine broke twice on one night! It was a sad day in the history of European Football from my point of view because my dreamfinal: Arsenal-Inter Milan got flushed down the toilet :’
