Toro Comes to Town and Ibra Gets His Century
By: Johonna | January 31st, 2009
What: Inter v Torino
When: Sunday, February 1, 3:15* pm local time (6:15am pacific, 9:15am eastern)
Where: San Siro, Milan
How to Watch: Broadcast on FSC, MyP2P is still not providing links to Serie A games, so there is always Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net. Somewhere in there should be a stream.
*All Serie A and B games are starting 15 minutes late in protest against the 1-year bans handed down to Daniele Mannini (Napoli) and Davide Possanzini (Breschia).
Inter welcome Torino to the San Siro this Sunday for an afternoon game, and hopefully, a good drubbing. The game will mark 100 appearances for Zlatan Ibrahimovic in an Inter jersey. Hopefully, he will get a few goals to celebrate. Inter come into the match in high confidence, which could be the kiss of death of us. It seems that whenever we do well, we follow it up with a stinker. Fingers-crossed that we have finally broken the cycle. Last year, Inter won this tie handily 4-0 (see below); this year, a similar result would be just what we need to really kick-start the second half of the season.
Here is what happened last year:
I remember this match — poor Recoba sitting on the bench for Toro, wondering how on earth he ended up on the wrong side of a 4-0 scoreline.
THEM
Once again, our opponent does not have a proper blog here on the Offside. Really, you lurkers, jump on in and lend a hand.
Ok, Torino is struggling. No use mincing words. They have only won 4 games all season, all of them at home. They have only 17 points and are on their second coach this season. Still, they have some talented players and last week’s 3-3 match against Lecce proves they can find the net on occasion.
Novellino has called up 20 players for the match:
Abate, Amoruso, Barone, Bianchi, Calderoni, Colombo, Corini, Dellafiore, Diana, Di Loreto, Dzemaili, Ogbonna, Pratali, Rivalta, Rosina, Rubin, Saumel, Sereni, Stellone, Zanetti.
Basically, Novellino needs a result in this game. Toro have only won 1 game in the last 10 under his control. One more loss, especially something akin to last year’s 4-0, Cairo may once again start playing musical coaches. A team with nothing to loose can be a truly frightening thing.
US
As always, the pressure is on to keep our position in the standings.
Mourinho has called up 19 players:
Portieri: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni;
Difensori: Cordoba,Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Rivas, Santon;
Centrocampisti: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Cambiasso, Mancini, Quaresma;
Attaccanti: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Crespo.
Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, and Vieira are all still injured. Muntari and Adriano are suspended, and Balotelli doesn’t deserve to be on the list. Inter’s web page, though, says that he, along with Obinna and Dacourt have been left off the list for “technical reasons”.
(I would like to link in the article where I found this information but Inter’s web page has converted to flash. While I like this because the SO works for Adobe and we all want the company to do well, the format does not support linking individual pages. You will all just have to take my word for it)
Mourinho has put the onus on Inter to take control of the match from the start, saying:
“It will depend on us. With so many matches close together in this period I think the team has understood how you win and lose, and why you win or lose. Intensity, desire, personality, patience and, above all, a good start to the match are key tomorrow.”
And I must agree. We cannot make the mistake of underestimating Toro based on their position in the table. We need to play with the same intensity we would bring to a Roma, Milan, or Juve game. Basically, if we manage to keep our heads out of our butts, we should be able to take this game.
With all the injuries and suspensions, I will leave formations up to more knowledgeable minds. I have no idea who will play in midfield and Mou gave nothing up in his press conference.
Balotelli Update
So, as I said, he was not called up for “technical reasons.” In the press conference today, Mou denied that Mario shed any tears in training yesterday, adding:
“Mario is a good boy. Whoever thinks I like excluding him in this period, is wrong. Working with me is difficult or easy. It’s easy for who always has the desire to win, to work for the team, to improve every day. It’s difficult for who thinks he’s king, that only the others have responsibilities, for who expect presents. For Mario, working with me can be easy or hard. It will depend on him. But he will understand. I’m convinced he will understand.”
I hope so, Mourinho, for all our sakes.
Ok, so lets just keep our wits about us tomorrow and play like everyone knows we can. Unfortunately, you will have to watch the game without me – 6am is far too early for me.
FORZA INTER
Well, at least he is all smiles now.

Quaresma leaving is a declaration by Mourinho that he has given up hope on HIS 4-3-3 for THIS SEASON. In doing so, he is also giving up on the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE for THIS SEASON.
Come the summer, we will swap Quaresma for Joe Cole.
It is heartening to see Mourinho planning long term.

I dont expect RQ to come back. He’s talented but all the criticism got to him.
b-52, I dont want to see the 4-3-3 this season or next season. If there’s a swap deal for RQ Im sure it will involve Drogba. The 4-3-3 would probably work better in Europe than the Serie A though.
As far as the CL goes we have an obvious advantage in midfield and Vidic is out for the first leg. It could work out well if Man U come out attacking as we’re well suited to hit on the counter. Ibra is gonna have to make the difference and Adriano has to be ready.

I dont expect RQ back either , shame it didnt work out and i too dont want to see the 4 3 3 again unless we get two xavi type mids who can control the tempo of a game and are near impossible to get the ball off of and two consistant dribblers and good crosser on either wings its never gonna work

E, I totally agree about the midfield in the 4-3-3. Our midfield was the biggest problem in that formation but the wingers got all the blame. You cant play Cambiasso, Zanetti, and Viera/Muntari/Deki in that formation.
I was sure that RQ was gonna be great for us. I was so close to ordering the 77 shirt in September. Thank god that didnt happen

noooooo.i hope rq comes back, especially with some confidence. i still think that he can do well. i almost bought his jersey too, but i wanted to wait until he took 7 from figo when he retires. good thing i waited.

Ok, I will try to be polite with this comment.
I have skimmed through your comments and I see that all of you are either stupid, or oblivious. Please choose one…..
I see none of you critique your so called “special one” for the quaresma debacle, or for the problematic formations that your team keeps experiencing. You write about players not “doing enough” or “should be playing here, or playing there,” but no critique is directed to the so called Magical Tactician that you have?…. Com’on!
In addition, even an outsider looking in call tell that your manager is at inter for all of the “headlines,” “money,” and “personal gain.” Would any of you admit that JM does not care S%@# about you, meaning the fans, or the team?
So what are you? Either stupid or oblivious?
Don’t get mad. I’m just trying to put things in perspective and understand inter fans……

We’re six points clear at the top of the table
Dont get mad. Im just trying to put things in perspective and understand inter haters . . .

What would be the point at railing against Mourinho? The players seem to like him, and, for now, we are at the top of the table. I think we are all upset that Quaresma did not work out, but sometimes that happens.
Also, even if JM isn’t perfect, I cant think of anyone I would rather have in his place.
Maybe you should add a third entry to your list: Realistic. There is absolutely nothing any Inter fan can do to change the manager, so why stress out over it?
Although I blog here, I dont feel that I have enough technical knowledge of the game or first-hand experience with the players to critique Mourinho. I know that I dont like to loose and I get pissed off if someone is playing poorly, but those are not critiques, that is criticizing.
If you have a critique, which I define as “an article or essay with a detailed evaluation or critical analysis,” then I would be happy to publish it on this blog.
Do you?

Soooo we are going to critique the guy who has:
Already won the SuperCup
Put us in the quarter finals? Semi finals of the Coppa
Put us in the round of 16 in the Champions League
Put us 6 points ahead of all comers in the League
made us the most consistent team in the League… because he has missed on a transfer or two? If this were criteria to critique then how does Ranieri have a job still, sitting at 3rd with a 2 game losing trend? How about Ancelotti who has made al sorts of transfer blunders this summer who had been in 3rd for half the season. What about Fiorentina, and all the transfers they made? How does Spazzetti have a job fighting for a Europa spot?
We aren’t mad, we are really amused that Mr. Check doesn’t have the ability to have thought of this stuff yet.
Don’t you get mad. We are neither stupid nor oblivious, unlike some. We have already taken a big dose of reality. And we have already put things in perspective.
Have a try?

this is how mourinho won two league titles with chelsea. chelsea played horrible football but still won. really bad football. you will have a problem with man utd though they are a machine

I dont know… If you win, is it really horrible?

I just got a reading of all the players who switched teams this winter market.
I think we did the right thing by selling. Anyone worth buying was wayyyyy overpriced.
Even the small time players seemed to cost too much.

Johonna there is nothing wrong with winning!
But appreantly we are stupid or oblivious according to Reality Check who, quite frankly and ironically, has written the stupidest thing I have read in a while. But please, don’t get upset. On top of what MAD has mentioned, take 5 min and follow how he runs the team’s every day operation and how he chooses his squads. Ask memeber of his sqaud what they think of him and what their goals are and then come back to us ask us about Mourinho. You are simpy a fan who has fallen victim to viewing the game through the media.
Now on to this ugly football thing. I can’t stand the view of the Modern football fan and Everyone’s desire to see this so called Beautiful foootball. The question I have is:
What is so ugly about winning and getting the result you need to be in the positions Inter is in?
Most people criticize smart tacticians like Lippi, Mourinho, Capello, Ramos, Benitez etc… because they play Tactical football. They want their teams to win. Too many people have it embebed in their brainwashed minds that Tactical, well positioned, defensive, playing the counter attack or direct football is “ugly football” Well it is not ugly. It is effective, well played football hard to break down football.
If everyone tried to play this so called Beautiful open, one touch football game, the word Tactic would not exist and that is very much what the game is about. If you get your tectics wrong you often lose the game.
People are misled. Football is a sport (slash business now?). You have to prepare your team to win. Winning is what it is all about. You have to think about what you have to do not only to score but to prevent your opponent from scoring. You have to deploy different strategies and be able to make mid game adjustments based on what you are seeing in a game. There is no logic in playing “beautiful football” if you are not going to win.
A win is worth 3 points. You only receive points for winning. If it is stule points you are after please take up the X Games. Football is not a sport for you.
Actually come to think of it Inter have scored a fair amount of beautiful goals this season all while maintaining the best goal differential in the league.

Dave,
It will be Cole. We would have done it now, but he is out for the season. Why, WHY, WHY!?!?!! would Mourinho help Chelsea out with this loan? Not for Drogba, who he could have had this winter without the swap. Drogba is a spent force, Mourinho knows this. Obviously, at this point, Cole is more valuable than Q, that is why Mourinho is giving up Q for this half a season.
Scolari: problems with Cole (substituted him every match), has worked with Q.
Mourinho: problems with Q, has worked with Cole.
Q + Cole both play on the left in a 4-3-3. Q for Cole will happen this summer, unless Scolari or Mourinho or both are no longer managers of their clubs. Guaranteed.

I was just reviewing some of RQ’s better days with Porto. Sooo sad that he turned out to be a no-show on the field. So much potential there!! It’s so frustrating to think of what could have been if only he had made it in Serie A.

Paolo, your words can translate to any team that has ever “scraped” by to earn three points. As I said earlier in the year on the Milan blog as we were plugging away at “ugly” one-nil wins, all that matters in the end is the title, the rest is quickly forgetten at the site of the silverware. There is not such thing as ugly football and in the same vain there is no such thing as beautiful football, the beauty is in the results, and anyone that says otherwise is a Roma or Arsenal fan, there is only so much attractive football you can stomach before you get hungry for what matters, the TITLE.

BTW, Paolo, in case it didnt come through clear, priceless comment!

i just watched yesterdays game earlier tonight. i really didnt think rq played that poorly. i missed the last 5 minutes so i dont know whether the chance he missed was the one he shanked wide from outside the box around the 83rd minute or after that. he looked good on the ball at least when he did hit that way wide. i really hope he comes back.
im not so keen on cole. he has been out for significant amounts of time due to injuries 2 of the last 3 years. i feel like we will end up with another viera.

Now will quaresma be back thats the question?

b-52, I gotta respectfully disagree with you. Mourinho has no problems sticking with the diamond. He won the CL with that formation. There’s no reason to go back to the 4-3-3.
Also, Mourinho’s love for Drogba is well known. He definitely doesnt see him as a spent force, even though you and I do. Id much rather sign a top class striker or #10 than Joe Cole. Tevez and Hamsik

Thanks Gianfranco! And of course my statement translates to any tam that has fought hard or scraped by to win. I am glad there are still people who get this sport for what it is supposed to be!
A few weeks left till the derby! Even though there will be a lot of golf left after it is done, the affair will be all that more intense if the 2 clubs enter it positioned 1 and 2 in the table. I can’t wait for it!

Reality check you’re a dumb ass ,
And o yea you can be mad if you want
Anyways as paolo and gianfranco stated a win is win no matter how it is gotten , I do wonder why people say that inter are boring when they probably don’t watch more than 3 inter games a year, maybe im bias but to me we’re far from that , sure we aint no barcelona but I repeat our games are rarely snooze fest

for me RQ’s done for good, he’s got all the talent and how i love to see him succedd here but he’s lack of tactical knowledge cost us to much, he’s driblng to much and he’s decision making is just aweful(yaiks)..Hows ANgel DiMaria sound to you guys??
