Trofeo Tim: Inter, Milan, and Juve – Oh My

By: Johonna | August 13th, 2009

Fun in the sun amongst thousands of ferragosto beach goers
Tomorrow, Mourinho will take a rag-tag group comprised largely of youth and non-internationals to the seaside town of Pescara. There, Inter will take part in a three-way with its closest rivals to entertain the throngs of Ferragosto holiday-makers. Whoopee. Last season, Inter lost this mini-tourney (came in dead-last even) plus lost a player to injury (povero Marco). This season, I would be happy with the kids getting a shot at some play time and keeping everyone healthy and intact. This is probably my least favorite friendly – the timing could hardly be worse. Most of the squad just got back from China then went back out for National duty. The boys are tired and tired players leads to broken players. But, since we are committed to participating, the least I can do is come up with a little something for you all here.

Muntari and Gattuso during the 2008 TIM Trophy
Last year Milan took us out on penalties.

What: TIM Trophy, Inter – Milan – Juve
Where: Stadio Adriatico, Pescara
When: Friday, August 14, 8:30pm local time (11:30am pacific, 2:30pm eastern)
How to Watch: RAI may be broadcasting this in the states (anyone?) or you can find a stream: MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net

The Tropheo Tim has been contested between Milan, Juventus, and Inter since 2001. According to the know-it-alls over at Wikipedia, Inter has won 5 times while Milan have hoisted the trophy the other 3 times. Poor Juventus, they have no Tim Trophies at all. Given Milan’s shocking preseason and our patchwork lineup, this may be their year.

SQUAD

Mourinho has called up 22 players:

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar*, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Materazzi, Rivas, Samuel, Chivu*, Santon*, Caldirola.
Midfielders: Stankovic*, Quaresma, Motta, Vieira, Krhin, Cambiasso, Obi, Mancini, Crisetig.
Strikers: Milito*, Balotelli*, Alibec, Destro (Milito was called up for Argentina but didn’t play.
Whoops. Thanks everyone for the correction.)
(* = played for national team this week; italics = youth player)

As you can see, a quarter of the squad is a youth player. In addition to Obi, Krhin, and Destro, Mourinho is bringing three new guys: Luca Caldirola (Italian youth international), Lorenzo Crisetig (Italian youth international), and Denis Alibec (Romanian youth international). If you are interested in learning more about these new young prospects, Inter has posted nice little profiles of them (here).

Why all the youngsters? Well, Mou is not writing off the tournament, but with the trip to China and then international duty for many of our starting squad, there was no other choice. Mourinho said:

“It will be a chance to try a few young players and see them up against important opponents, and it will be a good opportunity for those who have played less or those who didn’t play against Lazio in the Super Cup game, like Materazzi, Samuel, Vieira, Mancini or Quaresma. For them, and for my work also, it will certainly be a good opportunity. After, I expect to have everyone for Sunday’s game (against the Bahrain national team) in Austria, the last friendly test before the start of the championship.”

Trofeo tim badges
“… with the rossoneri and the nerazzurri, there are never any friendlies, no one wants to look bad.” – Ciro Ferrara

THE GAME

This tournament is triangular with three 45 minute periods: this year Inter will play Juve first, then the loser of the first game will play Milan, then the winner of the second game will play the winner of the first game. If the score is tied at the end of 45 minutes, the game goes to penalties. Confusing, isn’t it – and we haven’t even gotten to the scoring. If you win you get 3 points, unless you won on penalties, and then you only get 2. Plus, if you lose the game on penalties, there is a 1-point booby prize awarded.

Basically, I expect both Juve and even Milan to beat us this game. Wait, before you all start throwing things at me, hear me out: We are at half strength while Milan would really like to win at least one pre-season friendly and Juve wants to show they can challenge for the scudetto this year. They all have an axe to grind while Mourinho seems pretty happy with the progress the squad is making and would just like to make it to the season opener with a full team at his disposal. Of course everyone always wants to win every time they take the field, but I dont think anyone is going to cry if Milan or Juve walk away with the trophy this year. Meh, maybe we will come in second this year instead of dead last. That would be nice.

Dont forget, there is still the game against the Bahrain national team on Sunday.

FORZA INTER

Honestly, does this person really look old enough to be playing professional football?!? Rene looks to be about 12 in this photo. Yikes
Rene Krhin, professional footballer or 12-year old boy?

Well gooner I’d prefer to have a history of trophies over a history of Shit like your team has got. And no we did deserve to win the scudetto last season roma fans just think that they deserved it when the whole time I knew we would win it. In fact we would have won it against siena if it hadnt been for materazzi who missed the penalty that would have given us the victory he wasnt even supposed to take the penalty. Say what you want about how your team plays pretty football but in the long run teams like liverpool and man united will be remembered more then your team because of how many trophies they have your team will only be remembered for winning nothing while the likes of man united conquered England and Europe again and again. And you did not justify your place in the semi finals by getting owned in both legs by united you were never ever at one point superior to united unlike inter who actually deserved to win in the second leg against united. Your team is comprised of kids and as Patrice Evra said it was like a match between boys and men. I’ll tell you what I call pathetic watching your little gunner kids get completely schooled by united in their own stadium in front of their own fans. If you had faced a team like barcelona in the last 16 you would have been out faster then sporting lisbon was against bayern. In fact your team was lucky that they even got past roma who outplayed you even though they had like a billion injuries and suspensions to cope with in their squad. If Julio Baptista hadnt missed that sitter in front of goal you wouldnt even be talking about going to the semi final. The pk shootout does not make one team superior to another cuz otherwise we could say that burnely is better then Chelsea which just aint the case.

Poor Milan? Screw ‘em :) Not that Juve winning is any good. Hopefully Juve scores in their own goal too and it ends 1-1. I know there’d be penalties after that.

I missed the goal because my feed went. Whoever invented these live tv site is genius.

Tsk tsk. I actually kinda like Arsenal’s style of play and Wenger’s philosophy. Pity there are fans like Gooner who come out here and give their club a bad name. Why don’t you call yourself Bianconero or something when you want to bash us – as an Arsenal fan, you have pretty much no reason to do so…

And Milan finally won something, maybe there’s hope for a thrilling close-fought derby after all.

Meanwhile, more Sneijder rumours floating around. Some announcement is imminent, if the press is to be believed.

Even though juve were caught cheating for a 2 to 4 years period, they were probably cheating for the last 10 or even 15 years. and for your info as why I am writing here, MAD came and posted on the premier league offside talking shit about arsenal. and I came here to repay the favor.

Mickey, first if you think we dont have history, we actually do we won the league 13 times just 4 behind liverpool and man utd, and we are the most successful in the community shield and just behind man utd in the FA cup, As for the champions league we were unlucky in the 70’s 80’s because english teams were banned from CL. and I dont really consider wins in the 50’s 60’s 70’s legitimate wins, because at the time CL teams really shitty. As for roma they deserved to win, not because of the penalty you missed or whatever (because a miss is a miss, you cant blame it on a penalty miss) but at least you guyz were given 15 points that you did not deserve. On your other point saying who will be remembers I agree man utd and liverpool trophy wise are superior to us but we are right behind them, Same story in the serieA juve and ac milan are the teams who will be remembered in your league and you are behind them. About the roma CL matches, if you want to talk about injures, we also had injuries. they played better than us in the second leg but they missed a chance or 2, yet in the first leg we shouldve been 5 -nil up , but we also missed a lot, (so you dont blame it on the misses).
Anyway tomorrow is our qualifying match in the CL, hope we win it get out of the group stages and play inter in the knock out stage, only then will know what arsenal is.

Vinod I never came to just talk shit, but when your blogger comes to me and talk shit about my team, I cant just be quiet…

I never said I am a juve fan, I hate juve, in the serieA i like roma, and I dont hate inter, but when some1 comes to me and attack my team, and ill come and attack back

I thought this was interesting. I didn’t get to watch Euro 2008 so I can’t decide if this was too laudatory a report.

    http://www.fifa.com/confederationscup/news/newsid=798145.html

But for those who watched the said match, was this a factual reportage and not an overpraise ? Can people please comment on their impression of him from that match ?

If it is, then let’s just hope and pray he plays like that everyday. No wonder Mourinho is said to place him at the top of his list.

“and for your info as why I am writing here, MAD came and posted on the premier league offside talking shit about arsenal. and I came here to repay the favor.”

Actually MAD went to the “premier” league offside talking talking shit about the guy who decided that a team was in the title race after the first game of the season.

I didn’t say/imply anything derogatory about any team.

But we all know that the truth doesn’t actually matter to some people, right?

    Gazzetta:

Sneijder is cheaper and Moratti will make a selection.

Now, for the Dutch, Real call for 15 million euros in three payments. If it is OK for the President, Inter can close the deal today.

Now, for the Netherlands, calls the Real 15 million three-year payment. If it appears the ok of the President, Inter can quit now

Here we are. Today, Inter will make a decision on Wesley Sneijder. Rather, Massimo Moratti has to choose to either speed up the negotiations with Real Madrid. Or wait until the last days of the market to reduce the cost even more for the Dutch trequartista. The difference, however, is not huge. So the negotiations can proceed, based on a degree of optimism in the last few hours on both sides.

ok gooner so you consider beating the galactico real madrid side 3-1 in the final is a small feat while beating liverpool 3-0 at san siro after having trailed 3-1 after the first leg. And you think beating benfica a team who had won the european cup twice in a row before we defeated them in the final and were runners up the year before we defeated them. Id like to see your arsenal side match up against the likes of the real madrid who were famous for winning 5 or so european cups in that era. Lets see how well you can cope against alfredo di stefano. Your team would get their ass handed to them and would lose 7-0. While we beat them 3-1 so why dont you just stfu and stop trying to minimize the accomplishments of teams who have accomplished way more then you. For example I hate milan with every fiber of my being but I dont minimize all that they have achieved unless they unjustly cheated like they had with a few of their trophies. Oh and while were on that subject they shouldnt have even been in the 2006 07 CL but credit to them cuz they won it your team might as well not win it cuz you will never win it with the team you have right now. If we get sneijder then no team on Earth can stop us.

enough of this horse shit were not going to convince anyone that were better then them until we prove ‘em wrong. Its the start of the new season so anything can happen so lets not make predictions. I dont give a flying shit about what lippi says anyways people have written off inter before and then were proven wrong time and time again. I wish your team the best of luck tomorrow gooner I like arsenal as a team but sadly I think Wenger has lost his marbles and his unaware that his methods will be the club’s undoing the longer he is there the harder it will be for arsenal to break away from his failing philosophies. Not to say that he has been a bad manager quite the opposite but now great managers recognize their mistakes, acknowledge them, and then figure out how to correct them. Unfortunately for you guys I dont think Wenger has any intention of admitting to his mistakes. We’ll see how things go if we are going to throw out predictions for certain competitions then I guess we might as well. Yet again these are just predictions so dont take them personally although you might want to in your case gooner. Chelsea will win the premier league and the Champions league pipping barcelona in the final while united finish even on points with liverpool but are second cuz of goal difference. Once again arsenal are fourth but I predict that they may get a carling cup or an FA cup depending on who they face. I predict we will win the Serie A title with Juve finishing just a few points below and roma following shortly behind with milan qualifying for the champions league on the last day. Fiorentina take a deserved fifth followed shortly by Genoa in 6th while Lazio somehow manage to make it to seventh (highly unlikely that this will happen). Juve win the coppa italia and a great match up is set to take place between inter and juve in next year’s supercoppa. Milan finish another year with no silverware with Leonardo getting sacked while Roma either win the Uefa cup or at least reach the semis of the competition and finish the year on a high note. Finally in Spain Barcelona easily trot to another league title while Real Madrid flop considerably in all competitions and Pellegrini is sacked (even though it probably wont be his fault). Now depending on whether or not we get Sneijder Im going to say that we will do significantly better then last year if we get him if we dont then we will only improve marginally.
