We Learn Our Fate Tomorrow
By: Johonna | August 26th, 2009
In more ways than one. First, tomorrow the groups will be drawn for the next stage of the Champions League. Second, tomorrow we see whether Wesley actually gets on the plane this time.
For those of you that have not been following this year’s transfer season soap opera, Wesley Sneijder has reportedly said “Yes” to Inter… Again. Of course, he supposedly said yes on Monday before changing his mind and missing his plane on Tuesday.

He loves us. He loves us not. He loves us?
If you are to believe the rumors, the reason Sneijder was loath to leave Real was that his new girlfriend (he is recently divorced) works for the team and could not follow him to Italy. He had a meeting with team officials yesterday and supposedly had convinced them to keep him on. Today, though, according to il Corriere dello Sport, his agent informed Sneijder that he would not be on the Champions League list.
I guess that must have been the thing that finally ripped the scales from his eyes, because now the reports are he has agreed to a move to Inter and will be on a plane to finalize the paperwork tomorrow. In his own words, he is very happy to start wearing blue and black and is even ready to play on Saturday.
The only thing that keeps me interested in this affair is that the Plan B seems to be Julio Baptista. I think Carlo Garganese at Goal.com sums up my feelings quite succinctly when he writes:
“Baptista has been one of the most over-rated and inconsistent attacking midfielders to bless the European game over the past few years. The Brazilian has been horrible ever since he left Sevilla in 2005, and has failed at each of the three big clubs he has represented – Real Madrid, Arsenal and Roma. Why should this change at Inter?”*
The thought of him at Inter is enough to make me completely change my perspective on Wesley Sneijder. Whatever he is or isn’t, he is at least a huge step up from Julio Baptista. So, if it turns out to be true this time, Welcome Sneijder! ‘Cause at least your better than Baptista!
*On a side note, Garganese didn’t think Sneijder would much cut it either. He thought Inter should have gone for Franck Ribery or David Silva. Sure we should, because we have an enormous pile of cash just lying around.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW OF DOOM
Tomorrow UEFA will make the draw for the Champions League. Basically, Inter’s inability to do well in Europe has dropped our coefficient into the toilet. This has, in turn, dropped us into Pot 2 which means we are not a top seeded team and will have to play one them to make it past groups.
(For any that are interested, you can find how this coefficient is derived here, on page 42).
This fall, Inter will have to play (and hopefully beat) one of these teams:
– FC Barcelona
– Chelsea FC
– Liverpool FC
– Manchester United FC
– Arsenal FC
– Sevilla FC
– FC Bayern Munchen
Plus one of these teams:
– Olympiacos FC
– Olympique de Marseille
– FC Dynamo Kyiv
– VfB Stuttgart
– Club Atletico de Madrid
– FC Girondins de Bordeaux
– Besiktas JK
And one of these teams:
– VfL Wolfsburg
– R. Standard de Liege
– Maccabi Haifa FC
– FC Zurich
– FC Rubin Kazan
– AFC Unirea Urziceni
– APOEL FC
– Debreceni VSC
AC Milan, on the other hand, will be seeded so will have a much easier time of things. Oh well. Fingers crossed it is Bayern Munchen. I think I will commence to quaking in my boots now.
FORZA INTER
Well, at least we still have our hunky keeper!

Haha Ibra looks hilarious. Absolutely no one went around him during the raising of the trophy, he looks completely out of place it’s fantastic.

i just finished watching the barcelona vs shaktar super cup. have to say it, not too impressed. sure they won the spanish super cup 3-0, where there is loads of room to run, but against shaktar not too many clear cut chances. saw lots of messi, brilliant as always, ibra was missing. he started the match, but was missing.
i think we have more than a chance to beat them. they play using the wings, while we through he center. if we can really get at them, i am sure we can do some damage as they seem pretty light weight.Posted from

it on the inter website that sneijder is not gonna play against milan. he has not been called up by mourinho.

Mourinho names squad:
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 21 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 13 Maicon, 25 Walter Samuel, 26 Cristian Chivu, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 5 Dejan Stankovic, 8 Thiago Motta, 11 Sulley Muntari, 14 Patrick Vieira, 15 Rene Krhin, 30 Mancini.
Strikers: 9 Samuel Eto’o, 18 David Suazo, 22 Diego Milito, 45 Mario Balotelli.
2nd game that Krhin made the game day squad. I hope that’s a vote of confidence and not a warm body to replace a midfielder. No Quaresma.

A few Barca fans are sharing your sentiment, ajay. Others are saying (rightly) that it’s still pre-season (which is the reason the UEFA Cup winner triumphs in this match) for us, Ibra is still working his way in, and there were points where it looked like we just didn’t give a damn.
Couple that with an opponent with precious little interest in coming out to play (why should they?), and yes, it made for a clunky display. But still, another piece of silver for the cabinet.
Ibra wasn’t horrible, wasn’t great. Should have made the pass to Henry on that break. But not to worry. We’ll try not to let you all beat us too bad in September.

i think the best lineup for any match right now could be a 4-2-2-2…(back to front and right to left)j cesar, maicon, lucio, samuel, chivu, motta, cambiasso, quaresma, sneijder, milito, eto’… oh yes, change cuchu for obi or krhin…

Ajay, Chelsea and Man Utd also thought Barca were lightweight. Carrick and Fletcher were supposed to chomp up Xavi and Iniesta. What happened there?
Don’t let the Barca that played today fool you. There’s a reason why they won the triple last year, and that mojo wouldn’t have faded away just yet. Besides, in case I haven’t irritated everyone already with this point, we don’t have Cambiasso, who’s probably the only player in our team who can actually read and outsmart the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Messi.

Also MAD, Krhin made the squad, but didn’t make the bench last game. This game, he might though. But like you mentioned a while back, there’s probably no chance at all that he’ll get to play, although I hope Mourinho gives him a look-in late in the game.

“Ibra is still working his way in, and there were points where it looked like we just didn’t give a damn.”
Kxevin, get used to that. Pre-season, mid-season etc… That was a pretty typical Ibra performance in a match where he doesn’t have the time to pick apart weak defenses or poorly structured teams… And I’ am not disgruntled or talking in spite because he made it known that he wanted to leave Inter. It’s just the type of player he is. Where there is big stage, you will usually find Ibra under it instead of on it, making stupid faces. What you see is what you get.

LOL,some of you couldn’t wait to hate on Ibra, huh? Only his 2nd match where he played over 45 minutes and the final verdict is out? Oh well. Could have said “I told you so” when Eto’o missed that sitter, but no need.

“Also MAD, Krhin made the squad, but didn’t make the bench last game.”
From Inter.it:
APPIANO GENTILE – José Mourinho has named a 20-player squad for Sunday’s 2009/10 Serie A Week 1 match against Bari at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan’s San Siro district (kick-off 18:00):
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 21 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 13 Maicon, 23 Marco Materazzi, 26 Cristian Chivu, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Ricardo Quaresma, 8 Thiago Motta, 11 Sulley Muntari, 14 Patrick Vieira, 15 René Krhin, 30 Amantino Mancini.
Strikers: 9 Samuel Eto’o, 22 Diego Milito, 45 Mario Balotelli.
– Krhin was named to the squad last game.

Will Balotelli get a lower 1st team number, or is not seen as important in Italian football?

why doesnt RQ realize he needs to leave?
i hope we play 4-3-3 with Eto on the right and Balo on the left. The midfield is a big question mark with Cuchu out and Muntari apparently lacking fitness
Hopefully Sneijder can provide some creativity. He’s much better than Deco, VDV, and Baptista

“Krhin was named to the squad last game”
You misunderstand me, mate. I said he made the squad but not the bench for the game itself.
From Inter.it:
MILAN – Here are Mourinho and Ventura’s starting XIs for today’s Serie A Week 1 clash at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (kick-off 18:00):Inter: 12 Julio Cesar; 13 Maicon, 6 Lucio, 23 Materazzi, 4 Zanetti; 11 Muntari, 14 Vieira, 8 Thiago Motta; 5 Stankovic; 22 Milito, 9 Eto’o.
Subs: 1 Toldo, 2 Cordoba, 7 Quaresma, 26 Chivu, 30 Mancini, 39 Santon, 45 Balotelli.
Coach: José Mourinho.Mourinho did that with Bolzoni for most of last season.

Schmujcko won’t be on the field or on the bench for this game.
In the past we opened with a 451 and then risked more after the 55-65 minute mark. I have a hunch that Mourinho plans to attack more this game.

jordi, Balo had the option to change his number this summer but said he felt comfortable w/ 45. It seems to fit him.

Also jordi, Balotelli had the pick of numbers early in the season. He was considering switching to 9 at the time, to follow his idol – the real Ronaldo – although Ronaldo wore 10 with us. But then he decided that Balotelli is Balotelli, not Ronaldo or anyone else. So he stayed with 45, and want to keep that number so that everyone remembers it as the Balotelli number.
What’s even funnier is that Santon was thinking of changing his number, but decided to do what his BFF Mario did and keep 39.
There was a pretty funny interview about this in July, can’t seem to recall where I read it though.Posted from

“You misunderstand me, mate. I said he made the squad but not the bench for the game itself.”
My mistake, I thought that I saw him on the bench last week.
I hope he gets used more than Bolzoni.

Also, I thought Mourinho said he was going to pair Lucio and Samuel in defence? If so, I expect Chivu to play LB, since Mourinho hinted he may drop Zanetti (Blasphemy! Off with Mourinho’s head!).
Posted from

dont worry mourinho wouldnt dare put zanetti on the bench. For crying out loud he is our captain. Put him in the center of the park with stankovic, and motta. And then we should go for the attacking trio of milito, eto’o, and balotelli. Mourinho will feel the wrath of the interisti if he puts our beloved captain on the bench. He wont though because he isnt an idiot.
Posted from

I think that Zanetti is going on the bench.
Chivu may very well be the left fullback, since Mourinho’s dropping hints that Santon may be at a midfield spot (right midfield in front of Maicon or left Midfield to replace Muntari?).
Mourinho only said that if he played Lucio and Samuel with Cordoba on the bench that he could match up with Milan’s athletic forwards. So if the choices are between those three than I would hope that he goes with Lucio and Samuel although I don’t recall that those two have yet to get any actual game time together.

Mickey, if we win tomorrow, the fans wont care if Zanetti was benched for a game. Results speak for themselves.

I will care, very much, if Zanetti is benched. He is our best defender/ball winner. On top of that he is our Captain and does not deserve to be relegated to the bench. His leadership and level of play do not warrant anything else but a starting role.
