Werder Bremen 2 – 1 Inter: Once Again Europe Kicks Our Butt
By: Johonna | December 10th, 2008
A few words from our fearless leader, Jose Mourniho:
“I never like losing, not even when qualification is sure, but the Inter tonight certainly wasn’t our strongest team and this is because I wanted to rest a few players… we had a formation that was neither fish nor fowl. I was tempted to play all the youngsters, but I chose a halfway house, out of respect for the competition and for ourselves… this was not the race where we had to prove to be a team of Champions. We will not be unfortunate to draw a European Great in the second round, it is they that won their group who will have the bad luck to find Inter, for this I am convinced.”
Well, I am glad that someone is convinced.
This was not a good game for us. Not, by any means, our worst – that would have to be a toss-up between the home game against Panathinaikos or the away game against Anorthosis. In both we played, as Mou said, like “a bunch of schoolkids.” Much like teenagers, we did just enough to get by – 8 points is the bare minimum we needed to move on and it is the fewest number of points among the qualifying teams. Whoopee.
Apparently Mou was proud of the team’s performance, saying “They were highly physical and played with great attention and concentration, something that had not done in races against Greeks and Cypriots.”
There were some interesting points Mou made in his address. First, he finally admitted that a 4-4-2 works best for Inter:
“We, at this moment, we are at our most comfortable with the 4-4-2 that allows us to express all our strength, physical, mental and tactics in midfield.”
Thank goodness for that. But what, then, of our expensive new winger brought purposefully for the 4-3-3 that we cannot make work? Well, they are being re-purposed:
“...the positive notes [from this game] are the new role of Mancini as a trequartista and Quaresma as a second striker.”
Wow. I do not think this bodes well for either Crespo or Adriano. Really, how many strikers does a team need? If Quaresma is moving up, then someone has got to go. Also, I have to say, Adriano did not have his best game last night. I think he wanted to do well, but just could not manage it.
Another player who, according to Mourinho, was not at his best was Maxwell, who “never managed to play with the necessary concentration and intensity.” That is strange for Maxi. Perhaps it was because he did not come on until the half and was having difficulty finding his game-legs.
Probably the worst thing to come from this game is that Marco Materazzi has been injured. Markus Rosenberg elbowed Marco in the face as they both went up for a header in the 17th minute of last night’s game (see below). The ref decided that Marco was faking (because I guess that is what Italians do, or something) and let play resume with no foul called. Marco continued for the rest of the half. It turns out the Rosenberg’s elbow broke Marco’s cheekbone. He had surgery this morning and his recovery time has yet to be assessed. Tanti Aguri, Marco.

Just after the elbow

Marco “feigning” injury on the ground.
It wasn’t all bad, though. There were a couple of bright spots. One was most certainly Ibra’s goal late in the second half (Laurie has a video on the main page). Grazie Ibra! I will most definitely take it as a consolation prize.
The second was that, with last night’s game, Javier Zanetti has matched Giuseppe Bergomi’s club record of 117 European appearances. Zanetti said: “Inter is my second home, this club has put its faith in me ever since I arrived here. Almost the whole of my footballing career has been here, I almost feel Italian.”
What will we ever do without him?
Ok. So we are through. Great. Now lets see if we cant nail this year’s Scudetto down once and for all. What do you say? Six more points before the break? Certo.

Moratti is defending Adriano (again), but it’s pretty clear that he wasn’t at training yesterday. The “injury” that the official website has come up with appears to be news to independent sources who were at la Pinetina.
The guy needs serious help (and I’m afraid he isn’t going to get it as long as people keep covering for him).

Well of course the official news is going to be something different…just like how Stevie G officially pulls his groin every match before unimportant England duty.

The club website will never confirm something like that.
Adri’s a sad character. He’s young enough to get it together but he needs serious help. He should leave in January

Hmmm. So how do we feel about Drogs? Apparently he really really wants Mou.

I am indifferent to Drogba. I don’t think he and Ibra can coexist for long.
How long did we loan Aquafresca out for?
I am disappointed in Adri. I wanted nothing more for him to retun to being L’Imperatore. I actually really thought he would too.

I think Adri is looking for a daddy. I dont think Mou wants to be his father and that is the problem.
I think Aquafresca is just on loan for this season. Does anyone think that Balotelli will be ready to take Adri’s place should he be asked to leave? Will he have the same physical presence.

I think if Balotelli adjusts his attitude and works very hard he can be a very dominant presence. He is very strong and very skilled but needs to improve and mature in the mental aspects of the game.
Right now he thinks he is too great for his own good. He hasn’t proven a thing yet. He is touted to be very good, but he has also shown poor judgement in some cases.
Provided he works hard and keeps the right attitude he can be just as dangerous as Adriano once was, if not more.

I like the Drogba idea. His physical presence could free up space for Ibra, similar to what Adri does. I think the reason why Adri hasnt been axed is because Ibra likes playing with him.
I would rather put faith in Balo than buy Drogba, but Mou doesn’t seem to trust him yet. Ibra’s always frustrated with him too.

Why would Mourinho go public about Adriano every time he has messed up previously and not go public this time? Why did all the sources claim Maicon was drunk too yet there are pictures of Maicon at training? No one has answered these questions yet.

lol? its is my computer.
why is it like looking at someone’s medicine cabinet?

I would love to see Drogba but only at a reasonable price…some kind of swap deal with Adriano involved. I have a feeling that if Mo stays then Balotelli won’t really get to flourish. They just don’t get along.
It’s still a bit early to judge, but Mancini and especially Quaresma seem like bad deals.

Because it is sort of an impersonal thing that speaks volumes about its owner. If you really want to know a person, take a look in their bathroom cabinets.
A computer desktop is similar in that I can tell a lot about you as a person by the icons on your desktop.

so what can you tell about me? (this is sorta interesting)

Well, I am thinking that is you and your girlfriend in the photo… LuXa? You dont seem all that happy that she is going to Evan’s house.
You are studying Calculus and Microeconomics. You play poker and the sims…Lots of stuff.

I agree with b-52 – a lot of things don’t make sense. Knowing Adri’s recent behavior, I don’t completely doubt these “news”. If it they are true, it looks like he’s dragging some of the other “good ones” with him too. Maicon? C’mon, he knows better. You can take a Brazilian out of the Carnaval, but…
Anyway, the Drogba deal sounds better and better, but we can’t be paying gazillions for him. The latest from Abrahamovic is that he lost tons of money due to the recent economic downturn, and is not willing to invest as much in Chelsea. Which can mean trying to sell their “extra” frontman to the highest bidder. Knowing Mou’s love for Drogs, and Moratti’s (near blind) faith in Mou, this can happen…. If we play Drogba as the target man, and Ibra just behind him, it may actually work.
In terms of Balo, he’s just a kid. Just think of yourself when you were 18 (looking at Kirby’s desktop, not sure if he has to go too far, just kidding Kirby!) – he’s confused and it doesn’t help when the agents are feeding stupid things int he head.
One thing that keeps coming up is “Italian media creating rumors.” Is it really that bad in Italy? I’ve only been to Italy for 3 weeks (and only to watch soccer), so don’t know.Posted from

Yes, it really is that bad.
Three all sports dailies, more than half a dozen national dailies with extensive sports coverage, a Sky 24/7 sports “news” channel, extensive coverage on all terrestrial channels and literally dozens of local television and radio shows.
The beast is huge, and has to be fed. When you’ve finished writing yet another 600 word piece about who wore which bibs in training, making things up (or just transcribing something that someone else has made up) is very tempting.

Worse, Balotelli’s agent is his brother. It is probably almost impossible to get impartial advice from your brother!
Skyder, Italy has a gazillion daily sports newspapers devoted almost entirely to football. As such, any offhand comment made by a contact at a club turns into the scoop of the century. I don’t know that the Italian media actually fabricate rumors, but they certainly capitalize on every stray piece of gossip. With all that space to fill, every little teaser becomes a full-blown story. You just have to take some things with a grain of salt (like that ridiculous story that C.Ronaldo was on his way to Inter).
As for Adriano and Drogba… I think Adriano may finally be on the way out – or at least he should be. Moratti likes him though, and he may take some convincing that he should be let go. If he goes, I doubt he will stay in Italy.
As for Drogba, it may be that there are not too many teams willing to pay what Chelsea think he is worth. If they value him too high, no one will take him on. I think these economic woes will see a return to earth for some of these crazy player valuations. In other words, he may not be a expensive as we think. After all, an asset is only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

Good point about Balotelli’s “agent”. One need only look at the career of Nicolas Anelka to see what that particular “advantage” can do to a player.
As most of you know, I am a big fan of Balotelli and think that there is a very good chance that he will grow out of many of his current issues, but I also think that he is significantly more effective as a wide player or “second striker” than as an Adriano-like “target man” central striker. In many ways, he is closer in terms of style to Ibra than to Adri (which I think is one of the reasons why Ibra sometimes finds it hard to play with him). To take just one example, he is the best taker of corners that Inter have at the moment, and having your centre forward take corners is never a good idea.
I’m on the fence about Drogba, but I’m done with Adriano unless he is willing to go into a serious residential rehab program where he can begin to come to grips with his issues and try to get some control of his life back. The person is always more important than the player, and I’m genuinely concerned about him becoming another Gascoigne or Garrincha.

Or perhaps Alex Del Piero for the positive side.

It’s pretty clear that Adriano was not drunk at training this week.
On to more interesting things, the squad for tomorrow:
No Quaresma or Mancini.
Jimenez, Figo and Chivu all called up.
Looks like we’ll play 4-3-1-2.

The Italian media should try to focus some of its energy in making Serie A more attractive to the world audience, as Sky Sports has quite well for the EPL. I’m not saying Serie A is the “best” league in the world right now in terms of entertainment, but a lot of people think it’s boring, which obviously I don’t agree with. The media can play a positive role. Also, wasn’t it only last month that both Mour and Moratti said that the reason Ibra doesn’t win the Ballon D’Or is because the media in Italy doesn’t hype him enough.
