Adriano to go?

By: paolo gorini | August 15th, 2007

News from Italy suggests that Massimo Moratti has turned down a 15 million euro bid from Valencia for Adriano. No sooner do I talk about the “embarrassment of riches” we have in attack than Moratti looks to move some of them on… “25 million is what I want,” is the noise coming from Moratti which is fair enough. Whether he will get it is another thing though. After all, we are talking about a striker who has hit rock bottom over the past two years, has rarely shone at club or international level since 2005 and has been more of a liability than a threat in an Inter shirt. The Brazilian has said he has had a lot of personal problems over the past couple of years (not for us to speculate on them), but he has shot his bolt. Time for him to move on and for Moratti to get what he can for him. 15 million is a good sum and certainly more realistic than the 25 million euros he says he wants for him. Are Barcelona and Real Madrid interested in him? Certainly not at that price! Perhaps a loan period away somewhere would do Inter, Adriano and any potential suitors more good than harm?

Failing that, the Brazilian national side, who also play out of the San Siro, might want to take him on?

Most of this is copied from what I wrote on the Italy page….

I think the $25 Million price tag is a, “Please do not bother me,” notice. No secret that Moratti loves Adriano and the Club will bend over backwards for him.

Inter may be waiting until the January Transfer market to see how the season is playing out up to that point. If Adriano has not come around or is not getting any playing time, and they really do need that one midfielder that they still have not aquired, they may swap Adriano for a high profile Midfielder. Maybe they are not so stupid. Adriano has been regarded as troubled, drunk, out of shape and off form for approximately the last 18 months. What’s another 4? If they are offering 15 million now, I believe nothing will change between now and January. If he improves and they wish to move him they could get more.

I think Adriano will get chances over Cruz to start the season because Inter seem to have a soft spot when it comes to dealing with him. They will give him all the opportunity in the world before they give up on him. It may be a confidence booster for Adri to use him right off the bat. Maybe not as a starter, but I could see them bringing him on in the 60th minute or so to showcase his ability early and often.

We know Cruz will not complain about playing time and when he is called upon, he can produce. Inter knows this and have peace of mind knowing that if Adri busts they have reliable Cruz. I think they will give Adri more looks earlier on just like they did last season until they either decide to move him or not or just let him sit on the bench while his chances go to Cruz.

But… If Adri gets his chances early and makes good, then 10 times out of 10 I would take a top form Adrinao over Cruz any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Persoanlly I would like for nothing more than to have Adriano return to top form and tear up the Serie A. It can happen and its only a matter of time. Players go through bad stints all the time. I can’t throw im under the bus just yet.

There was an article about Adriano there as well which I had commented on. I basically just copied and pasted most of my comments from that page and left a comment here as well!
